Um, go Leafs go?
Want to understand how important hockey is to Canadians?
A five-year old girl, Farah Khan, was murdered in Toronto in December 1999, and her parents were charged. The jury was supposed to start deliberating last week, but according to this Toronto Sun article, the judge delayed sequestering the jury for one night:
"In accordance with your wishes, some of you think that the locals (Leafs) have a chance, you may retire today," Justice David Watt, himself a hockey fan and an excellent player, said yesterday in delaying the end of his lengthy, final instructions to the jury until this morning."I understand you will be able to go home to watch Ottawa (and) -- who is that they are playing?" cracked the judge.
"I think your choice to wait until tomorrow is a prudent one."
The jury's choice to watch hockey staved off their sequestering last night. If they had been sequestered, they would have been shut out of any TV or radio broadcasts of last night's deciding game, in which the Leafs trounced the Senators.
If that doesn't indicate the prominence hockey plays in the lives of many Canadians, well, I don't know what does.
