Time To Relax

It has been an exhausting 10 days, which has seen me in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sacramento, West Hartford, Boston, and New York. Add that to Montreal, Kingston, and Halifax since the middle of October, and it all adds up to one tired me.

In that time, I went to two weddings--including my buddy Ian's, may you and Erin grow happy and wrinkly together--a fantastic Halloween party / ultimate tournament with some great old friends, two greats seminars in San Francisco, a Raptors-Kings basketball game, a Bills-Patriots football game, and a Nets-Rockets basketball game.

While on the West Coast, I saw good buddies Ray and Will, visited old acquaintances at BackWeb (San Jose) and Yahoo! (Sunnyvale), and met interesting people like Dane, Dunstan, Matt the Wordpress guy, Steve and Mike from Combustion, and David--who inspired me to play with Ruby and Rails through his evangelism and demo--Jason, and Ryan from 37signals (who make Basecamp, a fantastic piece of project management software), among others.

The great thing about the seminars I went to--The Building of Basecamp, given by 37signals, and Redesigning Blogger, given by Jeff Veen of Adaptive Path and Doug Bowman of Stopdesign--which were great, and about which I'll shortly post reviews--in a city like San Francisco are the people that attend these sorts of things. SF has such a critical mass of geeks (this is a good thing) that it is inspiring to be there.

It's like any place that is known for its specialization in a creative industry, I suppose: New York for fashion, LA for film, and Detroit for designing gas-guzzling SUVs. Being in a diverse place where random meetings with other creative types are a relatively frequent occurance can spur interesting discussions and the exchange of ideas, which can be tremendously energizing.
