Apple Got Four

The Industrial Designs Excellence Awards are out. Some especially interesting consumer products.

Interestingly, Samsung won three awards--they're not a company I associate with beautiful or intelligent design.

I was also happy to see that Toyota's new entry targeted at 20-somethings, the Scion xB, won a Bronze in the Transportation category. I love the look of this car, despite a certain someone's protestations that it is stunningly ugly.

I had a similar crush on the Honda Element, though the first time my mother saw one (an orange one, mind you), she thought it was so ugly that the driver must have been paid to drive around in it. So I empathize with your situation.

However, I'm a bit suspicious of this whole "Scion" sales thing. It looks and reads like greasy, superficial marketing: "The xB is all about attitude. The question is, how much can you handle? Cruise with your friends and chill." Are you kidding me? I'd expect better schlock from the parody network executives on the Simpsons.

I guess I see the Scion line as an attempt to cash in on an auto fad. Build a "funky" web site, fill it with pictures of young, happy people, link it to a "fun" sub-site with contests and free giveaways (the "live" link in the top-right corner), and then sell lots and lots of weird cards. It makes me lose respect for Toyota. I find the "no haggle pricing" Saturn rip-off particularly grating; I don't see how they can make this work in a dual sales environment, and I suspect that it's just an attempt to prevent people from getting a deal. In the case of the xB, I think it's a poorer, catch-up version of the Honda Element, but then again, I'm smitten.
