The amount of opportunity
in the United States is absolutely mind-boggling, and it's something I have been struggling with as a Canadian. The "Brain Drain" is something that I am concerned about because what with the higher salaries, opportunity, and quality of life resulting from higher pay in the US, it is going to be exceedingly difficult for Canada to compete. Another problem is that there is a serious dearth of entry-level IT jobs in Canada:
"I'm a Canadian living and working in the United States. I'm a network admin. I make 40K a year and I'm 22. The problem with Canada is that no one wants to give a young person a chance. I've been living in the US for two years now. My first job, I made about 20K, as a technician. My skills were recognized instantly, and I've been promoted. There is talk that I will be promoted again. This kind of thing is just unheard of at home in Halifax (NS)."
It is something I have definitely encountered, and I'm not sure why it happens. No desire to invest in the future? No money to invest--it all goes to paying top IT people? Is it a policy issue? Are lower taxes the key? Or will Canada never be able to retain its talent?
